Victoria Regina

I was a bit startled to see a Maori sculpture and Queen Victoria's regal bust on top. New Zealand, 1980. I am not certain what the symbolism of the carved face means, but maybe "Heavy white woman speak with forked tongue." Posted by Picasa

That's funny and very strange. I'm not sure what to make of this...

Isn't it similar to the totem poles the Kwakwaka'wakw and Nuu-chah-nulth put by the house of the tribal chief? This is just Maori and recognizes Victoria. I don't know the history, but somehow it doesn't quite look like the person who carved the lower part carved the bust of Victoria.

What a strange sculpture! Where in New Zealand did you find this folly?

Dave,
Good question, but that detail has escaped me since 1980 when I took the picture.
