Badlands sunset
Two renditions of the same picture, taken in the Badlands National Park (South Dakota), with the sun setting behind us. I took the picture in RAW format (Nikon's name is "nef"). Of course, I can't load a "nef" image onto blogspot and expect anyone to view it, so I change it to a jpeg. Curiously, when I used Nikon Capture, it reduced a 6 meg file to a 78k jpeg (the lower image here). I like the layering of the sky in this massively compressed file.
RawShooter does a much better job of allowing permutations (or at least I find it more intuitive.) Their best jpeg is 3-4 megs and this one came in a about 1.5.
The softness of the colors and the harshness of the landscape make a contrast that is intriguing to me.

I had a lot of trouble with the Nikon Capture software as well...I won't use it at all...The same things happened to me. I've finally started to sort out some of the issues I've had with my Nikon after battling toothe and nail for nearly 3 months. I suggest just using the Camera Raw in CS2.
I actually had trouble that stemmed from all the Nikon software it all was screwy and on multiple comps both Mac and Windows. Stopped using the software and those issues were resolved. Plus Nikon Capture is very RAM hungry and slows the workflow to a snails pace even with 1.5G RAM.
What camera do you shoot with again I forgot?
Duh me never mind you tell in your profile that it's a D70...lol
I am asking around to see if I can get any more info for you. Some people asked me what your color space settings were? and also what method of conversion you were using and what version of Capture you are running?
Thanks, Laurie. Don't put yourself out. I have Capture 4 but can't check any settings because my younger son has a friend over and they are playing network games so Dad is relegated to his laptop. I have CS2, but these days hardly have time to see myself coming or goin. Probably just need to spend some time with a manual. But I do like RawShooter.
No problem, I was curious about this as well since I had similar issues.
I wish RawShooter was Mac compatable. Adobe acquired pixmantec and that should prove interesting when they come out with the next upgrade to CS2.
Quite a difference I agree. I use various software(s) myself to process RAW Canon files. CS2, Canon's Digital Photo Pro etc. Depends what I'm trying to do with the shot, so there is often hit and miss.
That is a beautiful landscape!
